About the General Foundation Qualification in Core Cymraeg

Core Cymraeg provides opportunities for learners to use Cymraeg in social and workplace settings, equipping them with valuable skills for life in a bilingual Wales.

By engaging with real-life contexts and meaningful work-related tasks, this qualification inspires learners to use Cymraeg and to recognise its relevance and value far beyond the classroom.

Built around the themes of “the area” and “the workplace,” Core Cymraeg offers authentic opportunities to becoming a more confident Welsh speaker.

Who is this qualification for?

This qualification is for learners between 14-16 who are working at Entry Level 1 to Entry Level 3 in this subject.

It will build on the conceptual understanding learners have developed through their Curriculum for Wales learning from ages 3-14. It also relates to and supports the four purposes and the principles of progression.
The qualification will provide a broad basis for progression onto GCSE Core Cymraeg by focussing on similar skills and understanding.
