- - Reforming AS/A Level Welsh
Background and purpose
WJEC is currently developing new AS and A level qualifications in Welsh and, to ensure that they are suitable, engaging and purposeful, we need your input and feedback.
Earlier this year, following extensive engagement with the education sector, Qualifications Wales consulted on design proposals for new qualifications to replace the existing A Level qualifications in first language Welsh and second language Welsh. Decisions were made based on these findings and the objectives of the Welsh Government's wider strategic policy for the Welsh language and Welsh education. As a result, Approval Criteria were developed which WJEC will follow when designing and developing the new qualifications.
The aim of the qualifications is to support learners to be confident and skilled users of the Welsh language, promoting lifelong enjoyment and development, and supporting progression to higher education. This will also contribute to developing the skills needed for a bilingual workforce, including the education sector.
We encourage all stakeholders – teachers, lecturers, school and college leaders, learners, parents and carers, higher education representatives, employers and professional bodies – to take part in the consultation. Your feedback is essential to ensure that these qualifications are sound, relevant and meet the needs of learners. By sharing your opinion and expertise, you will contribute directly to the creation of qualifications that reflect the reality of the classroom, the expectations of further and higher education, and the demands of the workplace. We are committed to listening carefully to all responses when developing qualifications that will support the future of the Welsh language and its learners.
Consultation opening soon: We are currently finalising the consultation and will share the link here in due course.
