- - Geography A-Level Review in Wales
Background and purpose
In June 2023, Qualifications Wales published approval criteria for new GCSEs and Level 2 qualifications. As part of this process, WJEC was asked to review existing AS and A levels to ensure alignment with reformed GCSEs and continued relevance. Geography was identified as one of the subjects requiring the highest level of review, within the context of a targeted review rather than a full reform.
A stakeholder meeting was held in December 2025 with four Geography appointees to discuss potential changes to the AS and A Level Geography specification. These discussions informed the development of a proposed revised specification which was independently reviewed by three practising teachers and Dr Sylia Knight from the Royal Meteorological Society to ensure that climate change was adequately covered.
The proposed specification structure remains unchanged. Most content is retained, with refinements focusing on relevance, depth, and manageability.
We will be hosting an online meeting to present the proposed changes and the rationale behind them on Tuesday 5th May 4.00-5.30pm. You can book your place here:
A Level Geography Review – Attendance
We will also be running a consultation survey.
We encourage all teachers and lecturers to take part in the consultation. Your feedback is essential to ensure that these qualifications are sound, relevant and meet the needs of learners. By sharing your views and expertise, you will contribute directly to the review of AS and A Level Geography for first teaching in 2027.
Consultation opening soon: We are currently finalising the consultation and will share the link here in due course.
