Sustainability in Action – What Teachers Say
In 2024 WJEC launched the UK’s first Sustainability suite of qualifications, designed to equip learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to work the 'net zero' jobs of tomorrow.

Donna Gwilliam, Lecturer at NPTC Group of Colleges (Neath campus) is currently delivering Level 2 Sustainability in Action, and plans to offer units from Sustainability in Context next year, allowing her learners to work towards a larger qualification. We asked Donna to share her experience of the WJEC Sustainability suite so far: |
What attracted you to our Level 2 in Sustainability in Action?
Within the college, for learners who do not initially meet the entry requirements for our Level 3 qualifications, we offer an ‘Introduction to AS’ course. This one-year programme allows learners to work towards achieving a combination of Level 1/2 qualifications and GCSEs in order to meet the necessary entry criteria.
When we became aware of WJEC’s Sustainability in Action qualification, we recognised it as a strong addition to the ‘Introduction to AS’ course. The qualification is both accessible and appropriately challenging, with an assessment approach that aligns well with the needs of our learners.
Moreover, successful completion of this course helps to build the essential foundation for learners to progress confidently onto their chosen Level 3 pathways.
How have your learners responded to the qualification?
We have received an excellent response from learners, who have fully engaged with the course content and consistently asked thoughtful, meaningful questions throughout their studies. This level of engagement has been clearly reflected in the quality of their work, with learners using a variety of methods that demonstrate initiative and ownership of their learning.
Additionally, learners have been able to express how the course supports their future ambitions.
How has WJEC supported you in the delivery of the qualification?
In addition to attending the Professional Learning events, I have maintained regular contact with WJEC’s Subject Officer, Laura Callaghan, who has provided valuable advice and guidance when needed.
Our learners have also made full use of the free resources available to support their studies.
Overall, delivering this qualification has been a highly positive experience, and I am looking forward to delivering it again next year.
