Summer 2022: Adaptations to GCSE and AS/A level qualifications

Summer 2022: Adaptations to GCSE and AS/A level qualifications

We recognise that teachers and learners have experienced a great deal of disruption throughout 2020 and 2021, and have consulted on proposed adaptations to GCSE, AS and A level exams, and Non-Examination Assessments (NEA) in 2022.

More than 1,200 teachers, lecturers, and senior leaders, from schools and colleges across Wales took part in our surveys, and we’re grateful for all the feedback and suggestions received.

Our subject teams have now reviewed the feedback in detail, and we’re pleased to confirm that for many subjects, respondents indicated their support for our proposals. In some instances, we have amended the initial proposals, based on the constructive feedback we received.

Teachers and lecturers can download our GCSE and AS/A level adaptations booklets, which also includes a summary of outcomes for each qualification, via our Secure Website.

Qualifications Wales has also confirmed that approved GCSE, AS and A level qualifications will be assessed via exams and non-examination assessments as normal, but reflecting the adaptations, in summer 2022. However, alternative arrangements will be put in place in case there is further significant impact on teaching and learning as a result of the pandemic.

Learners, parents and carers survey update

We have also conducted a separate survey designed specifically for learners, parents and carers – with more than 800 respondents taking part. The outcomes of this survey will be made available via our website in August.
