Meet Arwel Jones, your Regional Support Officer

Our new Skills Suite and Personal Project qualifications will be ready for first teaching in September 2027.

Meet the team that will be here to support you every step of the way in delivering these exciting new qualifications:

Can you tell us a little about your role and background?

“My name is Arwel Jones, and I am a Support Officer for centres in Wales. Before joining WJEC, I was a science teacher. Throughout my teaching career, I have been fortunate to hold Head of Department and Head of Sixth Form positions at various Welsh-medium schools in South East Wales. I was also a Head of Secondary School in an international school before joining the team at WJEC.”

What does your role at WJEC involve?

“I work with a team of Support Officers in Wales, advising centres on the assessment of the National and Foundation Skills Challenge Certificate and the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales qualifications. I’ll also be helping to support centres transitioning to our new Personal Project and Skills suite qualifications for first teaching in 2027.

A typical day involves responding to queries from Coordinators, providing advice on the qualifications I support, meeting with teachers who are new to the role of coordinating qualifications in centres, and advising experienced teachers.”

Who do you work with as part of your role?

“The team collaborates closely with other colleagues at WJEC, particularly during qualification development. Recently, many of our meetings have focused on the development of the new Skills Suite of qualifications.

We also meet with external stakeholders and regularly contribute to teacher network meetings arranged by Local Authorities or Consortia.”

What do you enjoy most about your role?

“I really enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience with teachers from different centres to support them in delivering our qualifications. Collaborating with teachers to impart knowledge and experience is an absolute privilege.

I am passionate about supporting teachers as they develop young people in Wales to become confident and active citizens, both in a sustainable global society and in their future workplace.”

What’s next for you and the qualifications you support?

“There are exciting times ahead with the Skills Suite being introduced from September 2027, and I’m looking forward to continuing to support centres as they plan for first delivery of these qualifications.”

Anything else you’d like to add?

“I’ve been fortunate to develop my career at WJEC over the years in a supportive working environment, working alongside enthusiastic and proactive colleagues. Learners and teachers are central to everything we do at WJEC, and I’m proud to be part of a team that supports them.”
