Leading sustainability organisation partners with WJEC to promote green pathways

We are delighted to announce a new partnership with The Sustainability Academy, which is now an approved centre to deliver WJEC’s full suite of Sustainability qualifications. This includes our Level 2 Sustainability in Practice – Future Changemakers, which is eligible for funding through the Welsh Government’s Personal Learning Accounts (PLA).

Commenting on the partnership, Steffan Edwards, WJEC’s Executive Director for Commercial Development, said:

“Our partnership with The Sustainability Academy marks a significant step forward. Their extensive expertise in delivering sustainability-focused training aligns strongly with our vision for these qualifications.

We have developed our Sustainability qualifications to provide a practical, applied approach, equipping learners with skills that can be used in their centre, workplace, and beyond.

With increasing emphasis on green skills, these qualifications will support employees and adult learners in responding proactively to global environmental challenges and taking meaningful steps towards a more sustainable future.”

Gary Carney, Co-Founder of The Sustainability Academy, said:

"Becoming the first independent centre accredited by WJEC to deliver this qualification suite is a landmark moment not just for The Sustainability Academy, but for sustainability education in Wales. WJEC has developed something genuinely significant here: a suite of qualifications built around Welsh legislation, Welsh values, and the future Wales is committed to building."

Sara Wilcock, Co-Founder of The Sustainability Academy, added:

"What excites us most is what this makes possible. Every organisation in Wales including public bodies, businesses and third sector employers now have access to a sustainability qualification that are fully funded, nationally recognised, and directly relevant to the work they do every day. The potential reach of that is enormous, and we're only at the beginning.”

About The Sustainability Academy

The Sustainability Academy is a specialist sustainability education provider, founded in 2020, that supports organisations to embed sustainable thinking across their workforce. Working with businesses, public bodies, and national institutions, including Thames Water, the Asian Development Bank, the Royal Navy, and the Royal Air Force Air Cadets, it designs and delivers bespoke learning programmes that build practical knowledge, shift behaviours, and generate measurable evidence of change.

With expertise spanning organisations such as the United Nations Global Compact and central government, its founders bring significant experience in translating complex sustainability strategies into engaging, accessible learning at every level of an organisation.

Sustainability qualifications and funding

WJEC’s Sustainability qualifications have been developed in collaboration with the Office of the Future Generations Commissioner, with the aim of supporting the green agenda and equipping learners with skills that can be applied in the workplace. They provide greener pathways for learners and employees across Wales, helping to build the vital sustainability skills needed for the future.

Funding for our Level 2 Sustainability in Practice – Future Changemakers is available through Welsh Government’s Personal Learning Accounts (PLA). The qualification meets the Green Skills criteria and is available to learners aged 19 and over, living in Wales.
