Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators: Reflections from the 2025 WJEC Innovations Exhibition

The 2025 WJEC Innovations Exhibition was a vibrant celebration of creativity and technological thinking across Wales. Held at the All Nations Centre, Cardiff, the event brought together learners, educators, and industry professionals to recognise the outstanding achievements of young designers and technologists.

In partnership with the Welsh Government, the Innovations Awards encourage young people to be technologically innovative and highlight the vital role of Design and Technology (D&T) in shaping the future of Wales.

Following an exceptionally high standard of entries, the judging panel faced a difficult task in selecting the winners. We are delighted to share that the prize-winning entries have now been finalised and will be formally announced at a Presentation Ceremony at The Pierhead, Cardiff Bay, in December.

The Vital Role of Design & Technology in Wales

During the event, we had the opportunity to speak with Jason Cates, WJEC Subject Officer for Design & Technology, who shared his insights on the importance of D&T for learners in Wales today.

“D&T provides the perfect opportunity to bring problem solving together with Science, Technology and Maths, and allows candidates to harness emerging technology to design, test, model and produce creative and inspirational solutions to real life products.”

Jason’s response highlights the interdisciplinary nature of Design & Technology - a subject that not only builds practical skills, but also develops creative confidence, resilience, and innovation. In an era where technology continues to transform how we live and work, D&T gives learners the tools to think critically, act sustainably, and make a real impact on their communities and the wider world.

Looking Ahead: The New Design & Technology GCSE (from September 2026)

The future of D&T in Wales is bright, with exciting developments on the horizon. From September 2026, a new GCSE in Design & Technology will be introduced, providing even greater opportunities for learners to explore design thinking and innovation.

Jason explained:
“The new GCSE will provide learners with an enhanced opportunity to take D&T thinking into the future. The new balance of 70% NEA and 30% exam rebalances the new GCSEs and rewards the designing and making of high-quality prototypes. The current pathways - Engineering Design, Fashion & Textiles, and Product Design - are retained, providing continuity and consistency for centres, teachers and learners.”

This exciting update ensures that practical creativity remains at the heart of the qualification, empowering students to develop, test and produce meaningful designs that address real-world challenges. It also reflects Wales’ continued commitment to fostering innovation, sustainability, and technical excellence through education.

Celebrating Innovation and Creativity in Wales

The WJEC Innovations Exhibition continues to play a vital role in promoting Design & Technology education and inspiring the next generation of Welsh innovators. The passion and skill demonstrated by this year’s entrants underline the strength of D&T across Wales and the importance of supporting learners to think boldly and design for change.

Congratulations to all who took part - and especially to our 2025 prize winners, whose work will be officially recognised at the Pierhead in December.

We look forward to seeing how these talented young designers continue to shape the future of technology, creativity, and design in Wales.
