Have your say on GCSE biology, chemistry and physics

Qualifications Wales recently announced a further consultation on the future range of science GCSEs, including biology, chemistry and physics.

As a result of this announcement, our current GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics will continue to be available pending the outcome of the consultation in autumn 2028.

Please note, this will not impact the delivery of our new Made-for-Wales GCSE science qualifications: The Sciences (Double Award) and Integrated Science (Single Award), which will be available for teaching from September 2026.

Complete our survey today

We have launched the following survey to understand stakeholder appetite for amendments to our existing separate science GCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics. The survey will provide 4 options:

  • Option 1 – Amend Unit 3: Practical Assessment of the separate science qualifications for first teaching from September 2026

  • Option 2 – a two-stage amendment.  Amend Unit 3: Practical Assessment of the separate science qualification for first teaching from September 2026 (as Option 1). Then amend Unit 1 and Unit 2 for first teaching from September 2027 for year 10 candidates.

  • Option 3 – Amend all units of the separate science qualifications together for first teaching from September 2027

  • Option 4 – Do not amend the specifications

We will review your responses alongside findings from discussions with stakeholders, and we will publish our decision in due course.

You have until 15 October to complete the survey, which can be accessed here.
