New Level 3 Vocational Qualifications for teaching from September 2023

We’re developing new Level 3 vocational qualifications for centres and learners in Wales.

Aimed at 16–18-year-olds who want to continue their education through applied learning, and supported by high quality bilingual resources, these new qualifications will:

  • be designed to be delivered alongside other level 3 qualifications as part of a two-year programme of study
  • support learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of a specific subject or sector area whilst also acquiring a range of practical and technical skills where appropriate.
  • support learners to enter higher education by being recognised by universities alongside other Level 3 qualifications such as A Levels
  • enable effective curriculum planning and delivery through a combination of mandatory and optional units (where appropriate)
  • offer innovative, practical, and up-to-date assessment approaches.

We are initially developing qualifications in Business, Engineering, Sport, Tourism and Health and Social Care; these will be available to centres for first teaching from September 2023.

Commenting on the development Sarah Harris, Assistant Director Vocational Qualifications said “As Wales’ largest awarding body, we continue to expand our qualifications offer to ensure that learners in Wales have access to high-quality, vocational qualifications that reflect current and future needs. Having recently launched our revised suite of Vocational Awards aimed at 14–16-year-olds, we are now turning our attention to the development of new qualifications for 16–18-year-olds.  Developing qualifications specifically for Wales enables us to address aspects of a subject or sector that are unique to Wales, and as well as responding the outcomes from Qualifications Wales’ sector review programme.”

We are currently looking for representatives to join our Qualification Development Advisory Groups. Further information is available here
