Six Simple Steps to Support Teachers' Wellbeing
With so much emphasis on the exam pressures faced by students, the wellbeing of teachers is often overlooked. However, teaching can be both time-consuming and emotionally demanding, so it's important that teachers take good care of themselves throughout the examination period.
We have put together six steps to support teachers' wellbeing during what can be a challenging period of the academic year.
- Get your work-life balance right
Remember that there's life outside of work. Don't cancel on book-club or skip the gym to cram in a few more hours of marking. Help take your mind off the exam period by continuing with your hobbies; it will help alleviate stress and boost your mood. Wellbeing is all about achieving a balance.
- Make sleep a priority
Don't sacrifice sleep to get work done. Getting enough sleep is vital to maintain your physical and mental health. If you are to deliver the best education, keeping on top of your own health is essential.
- Value yourself
Teachers often worry that poor results reflect negatively on their teaching abilities, but it's important to remember that some things are out of your control. Whilst you can influence the learning of your students by providing them with the necessary tools to achieve their best grades, you cannot sit the examinations on their behalf, or guarantee how they'll perform on the day.
- You are not alone
Relationships and connections are central to our wellbeing. Don't isolate yourself; team up with a supportive colleague during this busy period. You can relieve a lot of tension just by sharing your worries and concerns.
Don't suffer in silence
- If your stress levels keep building, or you are feeling burnt out, it is important to seek support. Share your concerns with supportive leaders or even your GP – this isn't a sign of weakness!

- Light at the end of the tunnel
Plan something exciting to mark the end of the examination period, whether that's a trip away or a celebratory dinner. Recognising and rewarding your own hard work is vital. Having something to look forward to will help motivate you on those exceptionally testing days.
