WJEC Foundation Art & Design Exhibition and Awards 2011

WJEC is organising an exhibition at Howard Gardens Gallery, UWIC, Cardiff from November 4th to 11th to celebrate the exceptional achievements and educational experiences generated by Diploma Foundation Studies Art & Design (FAD) courses.

The show provides onlookers with the opportunity to fully appreciate the outstanding creativity and innovation of Foundation students from universities and colleges throughout Wales, England and overseas.

Over 800 students completed the WJEC FAD course in 2010-11 and the exhibition showcases some of the best talent and highlights the professional levels attained in discipline areas such as painting, sculpture, graphics, ceramics, film/photography, fashion textiles and three dimensional designs.

The displays will be judged by a panel chaired by renowned Welsh painter and educator, Emrys Parry and the best entry from the 16 centres submitting work will be presented with a cheque for £150 by WJEC Chair, Councillor Anthony Hampton and there will also be three prizes of £50 for highly commended submissions.

The Foundation Art & Design course (FAD) originated in the late 60s as a key element in UK Art & Design Education which is recognised as a world leader. Today the course is highly valued by the Creative Industries and the Visual Art Sector and caters mainly for post A level students, uniquely preparing them for specialisation in one of the many areas in Art & Design at degree level and beyond.

Hedley Jones, WJEC's Chief Examiner for Level 3 & 4 Diploma in Foundation Studies Art & Design said:

"Renowned Welsh designer Julien McDonald; one of the most famous living British artists, David Hockney and international sculptor Andy Goldsworthy are just some of the artists and designers who began their careers with the Foundation Art & Design Course and acknowledge its immense influence.

"The Creative Industries in Wales generate £1.8bn for the economy annually. Many of these organisations are headed by former FAD students, which speaks volumes for the grounding they are given."

"I'm delighted that we're able to give students the recognition they deserve and I'm positive that the exhibition will be a great success."
