Reforming KS4 Qualifications in England - WJEC response
WJEC is extremely interested in developing ambitious new EBC qualifications proposed for England by the Minister for Education. We are also keen to continue playing a leading role in developing qualifications for Wales, following completion of the 14-19 qualifications review.
We are confident in our ability to support students and develop and deliver high quality specifications for use by schools and colleges in England and Wales.
WJEC has an excellent track record of providing well-respected qualifications for students aged 14-19 in England and Wales, including different qualifications when needed to meet the different needs of the two countries.
We will continue to provide our full range of qualifications to centres in both England and Wales until summer 2016, which seems to be the date for the final full series of many current GCSEs in England.
In the meantime, WJEC firmly believes that it is in the best interests of students that the current three-country approach to setting and maintaining standards for GCSEs is maintained. Even if there are differences between England and Wales in the qualifications awarded from summer 2017 onwards, it will still be essential to benchmark qualification standards across all UK countries.
