Applied Science Pathways
Centres should note that June 2017 will be the final opportunity for candidates to sit and therefore cash-in their results.
The qualifications are based upon the Qualification & Credit Framework (QCF) which is a way for candidates to study credit-based units which suit their individual needs and maximising use of their talents in a subject area. The QCF sets out to create and accredit qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It aims to be accessible to a wide range of candidates within the vocational qualifications system.
Units and qualifications based upon QCF are:
• quality assured
• easy to understand
• geared towards progression.
There are two Applied Science qualifications each at level 1 and level 2:
WJEC Pathways Applied Science.
WJEC Pathways Science for Work.
Applied Science Units
Units that can be used for the Applied Science and Science for Work qualifications can be found here.

Centres are advised to check on the potential impact that new discount codes may have on the way performance measures for the schools are measured in 2014. In some cases, this may affect the combination of science qualifications centres offer to candidates. Discount codes are centrally set by DfE. Further information on discount codes is now available.
Important Information for Centres in Wales.
Please note that Applied Science (level 2) and Science for Work (level 2) both count towards level 2 performance indicators in Wales but not towards Core Subject Indicator (CSI). More information is available on the DAQW website.
An updated version of the 'Applied Science candidate grade tracker' is available. This is an optional tool you can use to track your candidate grades as part of your class records.
Principal Examiners' Report.
The Principal Examiners' report, providing feedback on the summer 2013 series of examinations, is now available. Centres are advised to read the report carefully as it provides helpful observations and commentary on the work produced for this series and can assist teachers in preparing their students for the next series of examinations.
