Uniform Marks (UMS)

New Specification:

The new accredited specification starting September 2009 for first examination in 2011 is available under "Documents" GCSE Specification (for examination from 2011). The accredited Specimen Assessment Material is available under "Show all documents".

Existing Specification:

The WJEC GCSE Music course is popular with centres in both Wales and England.

The specification requires candidates, through performing, composing and appraising, to develop aural perception and musical knowledge and understanding of:

  • the use of musical elements, devices, tonalities and structures;
  • the use of resources, conventions, processes and relevant notations including staff notation;
  • the contextual influences that affect the way music is created, performed and heard.

Areas of study

The course is based on five areas of study:

  1. Music in Wales
  2. Musical Structure
  3. Music for Special Occasions
  4. Music for Stage and Screen
  5. Music Evolution

Assessment

The scheme of assessment is in three parts:

  • Internal assessment of composing skills – 40%
  • External assessment of performing skills – 30%
  • External assessment of appraising skills – 30%
