Functional Skills:

Find qualifications and resources

In England, Functional Skills (FS) are a freestanding qualification offered at Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2, which may be taken alongside GCSEs or vocational qualifications.

Dates for internal assessment standardising CPD for the next academic year will be published shortly. Examination review will be provided online; further details will be issued in due course.

News

The Department for Education has recently revised the criteria which must be met for qualifications to attract performance points. Unfortunately, for the 2014 performance measures, FS qualifications are not of the requisite size and therefore will not count in these tables after 2013.
WJEC will continue to provide FS qualifications at all levels as centres have shown that the demand is there for a rigorous and pertinent assessment for the range of learners following these courses.

Submission of Marks for Centre-Assessed Examination Components

A new online system for the submission of marks and the identification of samples in centre-assessed units will be applied to ALL Functional Skills Entry Level subjects and Functional Skills English levels 1&2 Speaking, Listening & Communication from the June Series 2012.

If you require any further information / clarification on the new online system, please contact the FS Administration Section by email or on 029 2026 5128.

Unique Learner Number Requirements For Functional Skills

WJEC are requesting that ALL Functional Skills candidates entered for assessments from September 2010 have Unique Learner Numbers (ULNs).

The growing importance of the FS qualifications across different learning pathways means that the use of the ULN is vital to maintaining records of learners' achievements. Whilst a learner may not be studying for a Diploma currently, it may be a pathway that they follow later in life and therefore the ULN will be required for all component parts of that qualification, i.e. Functional Skills assesments

There are two ways to obtain ULNs:

  1. Key to Success (for maintained schools with candidates aged 13 and over)
  2. Learner Registration Service (for further information see the Learning & Skills Council)
