New specification (first award June 2011)
Along with other non-core subjects GCSE Art & Design has been revised for courses starting in September 2009. The newly accredited specification and specimen assessment materials may be downloaded from the relevant links on the right hand side of this page.
Particular features are eight areas of study to choose from:
- Art and Design
- Applied Art and Design
- Fine Art
- Critical and Contextual Studies
- Textile Design
- Graphic Communication
- Three Dimensional Design
- Photography and Light and Lens Based Media
Each option/area of study will entail:
- Controlled Assessment 1 (Portfolio 60%)
- Controlled Assessment 2 (Sustained Focus 40%)
Portfolio
Internally set and developed from personal and/or given starting points. A coherent body of work which must be selected and presented by the candidate for moderation.
Sustained focus
The examination paper will include images (picture starters), themes (one-word starters) and tasks (An explanation that may be of guidance but which will not be compulsory). Candidates must choose only one assignment and give a clear account of their intentions. There will be a period of preparation determined by the centre and a maximum of 10 hours under controlled conditions. All work must be selected and presented by the candidate for moderation.
Legacy specification
This course offers a practical course with maximum opportunities for a stimulating experience of creativity and art, craft and design making activities.
Candidates produce two coursework units (60%) and a unit response to the terminal examination - theme or task paper (40%).
There are seven areas of study to choose from:
- Art & Design (Unendorsed)
- Fine Art
- Graphic Design
- Textiles
- Three Dimensional Design
- Photography
- Critical & Contextual Studies
Candidates entered for an area of study other than Art and Design must have the terminal examination and coursework units from the same area of study e.g. a candidate entered for textiles must submit all units in textiles, a candidate entered for photography must submit all units in photography etc. If any coursework unit or the terminal examination is from a different area of study then the candidate must be entered for Art and Design. In all areas of study each of the two Coursework units must show different processes and educational experiences.
It is advisable that candidates entered for Art & Design (Unendorsed) re-visit an area of study in the terminal examination that they have covered during coursework.
All work is moderated by a centre professional visit.
