Unique Candidate Identifiers
Introduction
Each candidate sitting GCE A/AS, GCSE Modular and Key Skills examinations will be allocated a Unique Candidate Identifier (UCI) number, which will be used to identify individuals during their modular courses.
Modular 'cash-in' entries often include results from more than one examinations session. It is necessary to be able to track individual candidates' module results to ensure that the correct 'cash-in' grade is awarded. Whereas a candidate number is only valid for a single session, a UCI will remain with individuals for the duration of their GCE courses, even if the candidate moves to a different centre.
UCIs are also required for Key Skills and the new GCSE Modular specifications.
UCI structure
The UCI is a 13-character code made up as follows-

| Digits 1-5 | the centre number where the candidate enters his / her first unit |
| Digit 6 | Board identifier (0 in all cases for WJEC entries) |
| Digits 7-8 | year in which the UCI is generated |
| Digits 9-12 | the four digit candidate examination number |
| Digit 13 | Check digit calculated / allocated automatically |

Calculating the check digit
The check digit is calculated from the first twelve digits as follows:

ID1 is multiplied by 16, ID2 is multiplied by 15, ID3 by 14 etc, and the sum of the products calculated.
So for UCI 689990980001
(6×16) + (8×15) + (9×14) + (9×13) + (9×12) + (0×11) + (9×10) + (8×9) + (0×8) + (0×7) + (0×6) + (5×5) = 734
The sum of the products is then divided by 17, and the remainder calculated.
734÷17 = 43; remainder = 3
The letter corresponding to the value of the remainder in the table below is the check digit
