Two leading lights from the National Youth Orchestra of Wales and National Youth Theatre of Wales, managed by WJEC, have been recognised in the 2009 New Year's Honours List.

National Youth Orchestra of Wales Conductor, Owain Arwel Hughes, has been appointed a CBE for his contribution to music and charity. Owain said: “I’m very proud to be the recipient of this wonderful honour and look forward very much to an exciting year of music making.”

Former National Youth Theatre of Wales member, actor Michael Sheen, has been awarded an OBE for his services to drama. Michael, who has shone in film and TV work in the UK and USA, portraying characters such as Tony Blair (in the 2006 film The Queen) and David Frost in the recent Frost/Nixon, has commented that he’s looking forward to meeting the real Queen!

"WJEC congratulates Owain Arwel Hughes and Michael Sheen very warmly" said Gareth Pierce, WJEC Chief Executive. "I believe these awards recognise the quality of experience open to the young people of Wales who have the opportunity to participate in the National Youth Orchestra and Theatre activities."
