Both WJEC's GCSE Geography specifications now accredited
4 July 2012
Following the regulatory authorities’ moves to strengthen the delivery and assessment of GCSE Geography across all awarding organisations, WJEC is delighted to confirm that both our GCSE Geography specifications (A and B) have now been accredited.
Both are available for teaching from September 2012.
Andy Owen, Subject Officer for GCSE Geography said,
“We now offer real choice - two quite different and distinctive specifications that teachers can be sure meet all of the regulators’ requirements. I believe that the changes we have made to both specifications will considerably improve the experience of teachers and students.
“Specification A comprises core themes giving a solid foundation of human and physical geography. It also gives teachers an opportunity to select from a range of optional themes including Coasts and Tourism.
“Students will be engaged, challenged and stretched, especially by an emphasis on ‘geographical futures’ which will encourage them to apply their understanding of current trends to identify alternate future scenarios and evaluate their sustainability.
“Specification B focuses the minds of students on the geographical issues that are relevant to their generation. Students have the opportunity to consider stakeholder views on a variety of geographical issues and, in doing so, become critical geographers.
“One distinctive feature of the specification is the opportunity for students to develop and refine their problem solving skills, skills that are assessed through external assessment in Unit 2B.
“These are bold and exciting courses, providing students with a stimulating and motivating study of geography fit for the 21st century. The depth of coverage of both human and physical geography processes mean that either specification provides a solid foundation for the study of A level geography.”
