Review of Assessment Errors
16 September 2011
WJEC was extremely disappointed to report that two types of error were identified in our assessments this summer, affecting two enlarged print papers and one on-screen assessment.
Like all the awarding organisations in a similar position, we greatly regret any distress caused to students, parents or teachers. We have taken all possible steps to ensure that the candidates affected by these errors were not disadvantaged.
We have now completed our internal review of the factors which caused the errors, and have established actions to improve the delivery of assessment in future examination cycles. These actions will further refine the detailed processes already employed by experienced subject specialists, proof checkers and external suppliers to ensure the highest possible levels of accuracy in all our assessments.
Further details are available in our summary report of findings, which we are releasing as early as practicable in view of the importance of these issues for our stakeholders. These findings also form part of our input into the regulators’ wider inquiry into errors in assessments.
A Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) statement, together with links to all relevant awarding organisations can be found on the JCQ website.
