A Level results – students' success in new specifications
19 August 2010
WJEC Chief Executive Gareth Pierce today congratulated students on their performance at A and AS level and in the Welsh Baccalaureate. This is the first year in which candidates have studied new A Level specifications for most subjects, designed to stretch and challenge the ablest students, with the introduction of the A* grade to mark exceptional achievement.
Sustained hard work
“The new specifications confirm the importance of A Levels as very demanding qualifications of the highest quality," said Gareth Pierce. "So the success achieved by this year’s candidates has been gained through sustained hard work by students, supported by the committed efforts of their schools, colleges and training providers”.
The new A* A Level grade
Overall, 8.1% of all candidate subject entries in England, Wales and Northern Ireland were awarded the A* grade, and 27% gained an A or A* grade - an increase of 0.3 percentage points from last year.
The Welsh Baccalaureate goes from strength to strength, with the number of students awarded the Advanced Baccalaureate having nearly doubled to 4,360; this represents 81% of those completing the programme of study, and is the highest success rate to date for this qualification. "These successes are particularly valuable at a time when employers and Higher Education are seeking assurances that young people have the broader skills required for employment and for further study" said Gareth Pierce, "and in terms of UCAS points, this is further evidence of attainment by students in Wales at a level equivalent to A Level grade A".
