WJEC provides a range of GCSE qualifications for Wales and England, with specifications, assessment materials and interactive online Teachers' Guides on relevant subject pages. Personal advice from subject specialists and administrative colleagues is also available.

GCSE in Wales

Schools can choose from two GCSE options: linear qualifications, where candidates sit all their exams at the end of the course, or separate units taken at stages during the course. WJEC offers both, and the subject content is the same for both.

In GCSE English Literature, Geography, History and Religious Studies, additional marks are awarded for the accuracy of spelling, punctuation and grammar in questions that require extended answers.

The Department for Education and Skills in Wales has confirmed that for teaching from September 2015, there will be new GCSEs in English language, Welsh and mathematics, which will reflect improvements expected from the Literacy and Numeracy Framework.

GCSE in England

In England, candidates must be entered for linear qualifications. WJEC’s GCSEs are all available in linear format, accredited by Ofqual for use in centres in England.

Ofqual has confirmed that new GCSEs will be developed by awarding organisations for teaching in September 2015: English Language; English Literature; Mathematics; Biology; Chemistry; Physics; Combined Science; History and Geography.

The new qualifications will be linear, but many other details have not yet been clarified, including the balance of internal and external assessment.
