Gareth Pierce joined WJEC in 2004. As Chief Executive he provides overall strategic leadership for the company and takes an active interest in curriculum and assessment design and development in both England and Wales.

Following a background in Statistics in the housing, education and health sectors, Gareth joined Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni as Head of Mathematics in 1987. Gareth was subsequently appointed Senior Lecturer at the University of Glamorgan Business School, Head of Education Policy for the Welsh Local Government Association and then Director of Operations & Resources at Trinity College, Carmarthen.

Gareth is a board member and current chair of the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ), has represented JCQ on the Higher Education Partnership for Admissions and has been a member of the Welsh Assembly Government's 14-19 Extended Network. He was, for many years, an Associate Lecturer in Statistics with the Open University and has fulfilled governance roles in primary, secondary and higher education sectors.

Richard Parry

Richard Parry

Interim Director of Qualifications and Education Support

Richard joined WJEC in 2015 as Interim Director of Qualifications and Education Support. For both England and Wales, Richard oversees qualification development, delivery and monitoring, education resources, CPD and training and, for Wales, the Welsh Language Service.

After graduating from Cambridge University, Richard taught mathematics and computing in secondary schools in England before being appointed Mathematics Adviser in West Glamorgan in 1988. Richard then became Corporate Director (Education) in Swansea from 1998 to 2012 during which time he was also Lead Director for Children and Young People and Lead Director for one of the four school improvement consortia in Wales. For over 2 years from 2013, Richard supported Merthyr Tydfil CBC which had been placed in special measures for Education before joining WJEC.

Elaine Carlile

Director of Assessment Delivery

Elaine joined WJEC in 2007 as a Subject Officer, she was later appointed Assistant Director before progressing to the role of Director of Assessment Delivery. Elaine oversees question paper design and development, leads on issues relating to awarding and research, works closely with the regulators to ensure comparability of standards and manages the operational aspects of our centre relationships.

Originally from Ireland, Elaine graduated from University College Cork with a degree in Music. She has worked in schools in Wales and Ireland, teaching Music and Performing Arts. Elaine's dedication to the teaching profession was recognised in 2000 when she was awarded Teacher of the Year in the Wales Regional Final.

Elizabeth Arthur

Rachel Elias-Lee

Director of Finance

Rachel Elias-Lee joined in 2013 as Assistant Director of Finance, before progressing to the role of Director of Finance. Rachel leads WJEC's financial management and control, is responsible for setting the annual budget, fee levels and oversees business resource planning.

After University, Rachel completed her professional studies and qualified as a CCAB approved accountant with ACCA. She has held senior accounting, resource and operations roles in the private sector, local government and more recently in higher, further and tertiary education.

Before joining WJEC, Rachel was the Assistant Principal Resources at The College Merthyr Tydfil. During her four years here she was also appointed the Project Director for the £33m Merthyr Learning Quarter project that transformed post-16 education in Merthyr Tydfil.

Catherine Roberts-Straw

Assistant Director (Strategy)

Catherine Roberts-Straw joined WJEC in 2009. As Assistant Director Strategy she leads WJEC's strategic direction in both England and Wales.

Catherine represents WJEC in policy forums, with regulators, government departments and other organisations in relation to business strategy and risk. She leads the corporate approach to risk management, policy development as well as being responsible for the company's brand reputation and commercial development through the marketing and communications department.

After graduating from the University of Kent, Catherine joined Barclays bank on their graduate training programme. Her roles at Barclays included Assistant Director of Strategy and Planning, subsequently progressing to Relationship and Channel Director at Barclycard, followed by four years as Sales Director at First Plus before joining WJEC.

Ian Edwards

Operations Director

Ian Edwards joined WJEC in 2008 as Operations Manager. He is responsible for managing the print production and logistics of question papers and other printed resources at WJEC's site at Trefforest. His role also incorporates the administration of the post results service processes.

In 2013, Ian assumed the role of Operations Director taking on the responsibility for the facilities and buildings management for both of WJEC's sites as well as corporate responsibility for EHS, introduction of Quality Systems and the WJEC bookshop.

Ian's background is in manufacturing processes, Continuous Improvement and Quality. He has 20 years production and manufacturing experience in the fields of aerospace, electronics and metal production.

Beverly Green

Beverley Green

Human Resources Manager

As Human Resources Manager, Beverley supports the Chief Executive and Strategic Management Team in relation to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the human resources strategy and associated policies.

Beverly graduated from Cardiff University and is a CIPD Chartered Member.

Previous roles have included Human Resources Officer at the North East Wales Training and Enterprise Council and Human Resources Manager at Cardiff University Students Union.

Ian Morgan

IT Director

As IT Director Ian is the strategic lead for the effective application of Information Technology for WJEC, including all internal and external facing systems that support the examination cycle. He also represents WJEC in a range of external settings.

Ian was initially appointed as Deputy Director for the National Grid for Learning project when he joined WJEC in 2002, before becoming Assistant Director for IT Service Management and Collaboration.

Prior to joining WJEC, Ian was Education IT Manager for a local authority, where he was responsible for the strategic development and implementation of technology that supported both administration and more importantly, teaching and learning.
